Rezension von Jasmin BleyEs gibt weitaus einschüchterndere Dinge als die Erwartungshaltung der eigenen Eltern, sich bspw. den Lauf einer 9mm-Luga hinabblickend und einer Spionin aus dem ersten Weltkrieg gegenüberstehend sehen. Dieser außergewöhnliche Roman (auch einer meiner Favoriten aus diesem Jahr) verwebt die Geschichten dreier Frauen, eines Mannes durch eine gemeinsame Mission miteinander. Immer wieder springen wir in das Jahr 1915 und erfahren mehr über Eve's Lebensgeschichte während wir im Jahr 1947 Teil von Charlies Geschichte werden, die Eve aufsucht und sich gemeinsam mit deren Fahrer Finn auf die Suche nach ihrer - während des 2. Weltkrieges verschollenen - Cousine Rose zu machen. Sowohl Eve als auch Charlie haben die verständliche Angewohnheit, sich selbst (entweder direkt oder indirekt) die Schuld für die schrecklichen Dinge zu geben, die denen, die sie lieben, entweder während des Krieges oder kurz danach widerfahren sind. Das Ergebnis ist eine Menge Selbstgeißelung und der Irrglaube, dass sie andere um sich herum „retten“ können - auf der gemeinsamen Reise durch England und Frankreich sehen sie sich immer wieder mit diesen konfrontiert. Kate Quinn beschreibt sehr gut, wie schwierig das Leben im besetzen Frankreich war, von willkürlichen Hausdurchsuchungen bis hin zu Massakern in den Dörfern, ganz zu schweigen vom Hunger und den allgemeinen Entbehrungen, denen die Menschen ausgesetzt waren, als die Armee im Namen ihrer Nation vergewaltigte und plünderte. Was am Ende dann doch alle zusammenführt, ist wie immer: Liebe.
